Overwhelmed by Paper Clutter? Start Here

Even in today's age of advanced technology, paper is still everywhere. Many Baby Boomers and Seniors are either trying to catch up with the trend toward a paperless home office or have decided that going paperless simply isn't for them.
One of the most common requests I receive from families is help sorting through paper. While paper may not take up as much physical space as other types of clutter, it can quickly become overwhelming. Many people worry about accidentally throwing away something important, such as tax documents or family records.
The good news is that most paper clutter is just that—clutter. Much of it can be safely recycled or discarded.
Before you begin, gather a few supplies: several trash bags or a large recycling bin, a portable scanner, a shredder, and five file boxes labeled Keep, Recycle, Shred, Donate, and Trash. I bet you can guess which box will fill up the fastest!
Start with one specific area where paper has accumulated, such as a desk, kitchen table, or countertop. Work through one pile at a time, sorting each item into one of the labeled boxes.
When it's difficult to decide whether to keep something, asking a few simple questions can make the process easier:
- Is there a specific reason I will need this information again?
- If I need it in the future, can I easily get another copy?
- How current or relevant is this information?
- Is it worth the time and storage space required to keep and organize it?
Sorting through paper can be tedious, especially for Seniors. Limiting each decluttering session to filling the sorting boxes helps make the task more manageable. Once the boxes are full, take a break and return to the project another day.
Using this simple system allows you to see steady progress, stay motivated, and move one step closer to a more organized home—or make preparing for a move much less overwhelming.
